10-29-10 WG Parent email

Greetings Hawk Fans!

The Fall sports season is coming to an end. Congratulations to all of the MS/HS Volleyball Players, Football Players and Cheerleaders. The HS Football and Cheerleading teams are still competing. See the events schedule below for the dates, times and locations of upcoming Football and Cheerleading events.

Next Monday’s Football playoff game was moved to the UNI Dome due to the distance between W-G and St. Ansgar. Kick-off will be at 6:15. Buy your tickets here @ WG. Cost: $6.00. We will get a cut of the proceeds!

We will be taking a pep bus Monday. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!! Adults, kids, community members. Any elementary students riding the Pep Bus must have adult supervision. You must be signed up by 2:15 Friday so we know how many busses we will need. Call Pam in the MS/HS Office @ 515-438-2115 to sign up. Time: The Pep Bus will leave @ 3:15 SHARP. Cost: $5.00.

As we enter into the Winter Sports season, please be sure your student athlete has their physical and all of the sports forms completed. The physical can be downloaded from the web site. The other forms will be available at conferences or your student can pick them up from Kathy Walton or Kevin Thiele. Students will NOT be allowed to practice or compete until all forms are on file. Kathy will be available at conferences if you have questions about the forms.

Parent – Teacher conferences are next week from 3-8 PM on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make every effort to attend with your student. For those of you with ELL and ELP students, Mr. Evans will not be available on Tuesday but will be available to meet with you on Thursday.

********************************************************************************************
Donations for the gift card fund for the Chapman family are still being accepted. Send your donation to the HS office and we will get it to Pat Verrips who is coordinating this.

Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to sponsor the t-shirts. We hope to have the design completed and the shirts ordered soon.

I inverted the numbers on the school address last week. If you would like to send Mr. Chapman a note or card, the correct address is W-G High School at 306 West Third Street, Woodward, Iowa 50276.

W-G Parent Email(10-22-10)

Greetings Hawk Fans!

Congratulations to our W-G Knowledge Bowl teams! W-G had TWO teams make it through preliminaries and qualify for the State Competition to be held Tuesday, Oct. 26th at Merle Hay Mall.

We are hoping that the trouble with the phone system has been fixed. When calls are transferred to a teacher’s room, they should be able to retrieve the message. We apologize for any problems this has caused.

Watch the website for information regarding football playoffs. The pairings and host sites will be announced by the state just after midnight tonight. It is highly likely that W-G will be hosting a first round game next Wednesday, but confirmation of that as well as who the opponent will be is not known at this time.
********************************************************************************************
All of us in the Woodward-Granger family have been touched by the news of Scott Chapman’s diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The concern and support shown by students, parents, former students and staff has been wonderful. Thankfully, he is doing well and the prognosis is good.

Many of you have asked how you can help, what they need, etc. The staff at the MS/HS are providing a meal one night a week at this time. A collection is also being taken to purchase various gift cards that the Chapmans can use. Pat Verrips is organizing this. If you would like to donate to this fund, you are welcome to. Just send your donation to the school office and it will be added to the gift card fund.

The HS Student Council used some of their funds to purchase an air purifier for Mr. Chapman’s office and is going to be selling wrist bands for him as well.

Other fund raisers are in the works and ideas/help are welcomed.

I am hoping to get t-shirts made to sell. The idea is to encourage every student in the MS/HS building to wear it the day before Mr. Chapman goes in for his Chemo treatments to show him support. Because we would like to sell these to students at a low price so that every student will be able to get one, we are looking for businesses to sponsor the shirts. Any business or individual willing to donate $100 or more toward the production of the t-shirts will be listed as a sponsor on the back of the t-shirts. Any funds donated beyond the cost of the shirt production will be added to the “gift card donation fund” for the Chapmans.

If you would like to send Mr. Chapman a note or card, you can send it to the High School at 603 West Third Street, Woodward, Iowa 50276.

Greetings Hawk Fans!
We are currently having trouble with the phone system. It seems that when calls are transferred to a teacher’s room, they are unable to retrieve the message. We apologize for any problems this has caused. Until this is fixed, you may contact the teachers directly through e-mail. Each teacher’s e-mail address is listed on the web site ( www.woodward-granger.k12.ia.us ) under directory. The directory is listed on the District, High school and Middle School drop down menus.
You may also access your student’s teachers through the JMC Parent portal where you check your student’s grades. When you bring up your student’s schedule, there is a list of their teachers on the right side of the screen. You may check the box in front of the name of the teacher you want to e-mail. You may also check multiple names if you need to message several teachers the same information or question. Then, at the bottom of the teacher list, hit “e-mail” selected teachers.

You may also call the office and leave a message with the secretary.
Coach, George Ashman, will be the guest on channel 5’s Friday Night Blitz which starts at 10:30. Let’s Go Hawks! Get another strong victory for him to talk about tonight.

W-G Parent Email(5-24-10)

Another busy week. Looking back we had a great time at the 5 and 6th grade mixer. A lot of energy! (Maybe Mr. Bermel is getting old??) The students seemed to have a fun time! Thanks to the staff and parents who were able to help put this on.

The 5th graders
then visited the Middle School and went to a class and lunch with a MS Student. It is a little nerve racking going to a new place but I think at the end the 5th graders felt comfortable being here. We will also have a time in the fall were the student can come in and walk around to the different rooms and open their lockers.

The Middle school concert was a hit.
I am not sure but the sixth grade band seemed to steal the show. Everyone did a great job!! I appreciate the support you as parents give to the fine arts programs. The auditorium was almost full! Thanks to everyone who attended on a beautiful spring night!

Again continue to encourage you sons and daughters to stay up with their studies. They get pulled many different directions this time of year.

Sorry about any typos or misspelling (I do not have any proofreaders here at school on Sunday Mornings!)
Have a great week!

Congratulations to the State track participants and all participating in Spring Sports‼

Good Luck to the Baseball and Softball teams‼

W-G Parent Email(5-14-10)

W-G Parents:

Project Lead the Way Grant(PLTW). I wanted to let everyone know that W-G received a $50,000 grant to start a PLTW program. The shortest way to describe the PLTW program is a High School Pre-Engineering program. This program will start at W-G in the fall of 2011. We need to buy some supplies for the classroom and have some pretty extensive training for our teacher who is teaching the class. The class will be open to ninth through twelfth graders. We will teach two classes here on campus with the last two classes being taught at the DMACC campus in Perry(Which is not built yet!) It is very exciting for our students it is also very exciting for me since I am a Math teacher by trade and a 40 page Grant application was not a favorite thing for me to tackle.

Attached is a graduation letter for SENIOR PARENTS!!
I want everyone to know we have a dress code at graduation for Seniors that the boys need to wear a shirt and tie, dress pants and dress shoes. This year, not one senior said one thing negative about the graduation dress code. In the 10 plus years of doing graduations, I have always heard students saying negative things about the dress code –even to the point that they weren’t going to attend their own graduation if they had to dress up! I thought that this years’ responses from students says a lot about them as the mature and responsible adults they’ve become and says something about you all as parents. Senior parents, a reminder that you were mailed a letter about the awards night on May 26th.

Again thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to finish the year strong. I am probably the only person in the district who likes the weather rainy and overcast. The students and teachers are able to focus a lot better than when it is 75 and sunny. With the nicer weather and college students returning home, students sometimes do not make the best choices with underage drinking! Please check up on your students‼! I have been hearing rumors about "bonfires" and other outings that turn into underage drinking. We need to all work together on this!

Spaghetti Supper-- Thanks to all the people who volunteered their time and money for last night’s event. This includes parents, students, staff, and alumni. What a wonderful event! Thanks also to the many people who stopped in and ate spaghetti in support. Love to see that Hawk Pride!!! Check the Hawk Stadium Website for more info on that project!! http://wgstadium.webs.com/

Events are winding down for the year here at school!

W-G Parents

W-G Parents:

The MS-HS staff is participating in professional development opportunities to increase their awareness of available technological applications for teaching and learning (Web 2.0 tools). This was enlightening for all and generated a buzz around a new way of delivering instruction and learning. I learned about what teachers need to know to incorporate technology into the classroom. First they need to know what content(Content Knowledge) they are teaching. It may be fractions in math or compound interest or some form of poetry or some time in history. The next thing they need to know is their pedagogy. (Pedagogical Knowledge)(pedagogy is a fun sounding term of how they are going to teach something. It may be through lecture, cooperative learning, individual practice....) Then the last knowledge is the knowledge of technology. We have been focusing on the last knowledge of technology. We also have to pick and choose some that we learn because of what technology we have to use.

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week. If you would like to shock a MS or HS teacher, have your student send them a note or an email thanking them for something the teacher did. Maybe even send one to an elementary teacher they respected!

Important Dates:

3rd – HS WCAC Boys Conference Golf @ Woodward 9:00am
MS Boys and Girls WCAC Track Meet @ Panorama 4:00pm
4th – HS Boys & Girls WCAC Track Meet @ Guthrie Center 4:00pm
5th –
6th – 5th Grade Orientation at Elementary 1:15 – 2:15
Boys & Girls Golf vs. Ogden & Madrid @ Woodward 3:15pm
HS Boys Track @ Guthrie Center

Mark your calendar for May 10th, the 52nd Modern Music Concert will be held that evening. This event was inadvertently left off the Monthly newsletter so I wanted to give everyone a "heads-up." Details next week.

We are winding down the year and the weather is getting nice! Please continue to encourage your daughters and sons to stay up on their studies.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
GO HAWKS!!!
