Last Post of 2009
This will be my last email(Post) of 2009. A little reflection for the year of
2009. WOW, what progress we can look back on for the year. I remember
walking into the old middle school building and looking from one end to the other
and seeing nothing and wondering if it would ever get finished. Last
Saturday I was following a couple from the visiting sports team and listening to
them oow and ahh about our school and gym. Their comment was we would just
love to have your OLD gym, and your new gym is just phenomenal!!!
What a great feeling and a moment of pride for being a HAWK. Again, thank
you to all of you who had a part in the progress. I want to wish you and
your families a Happy and Safe Holiday and New Year!

Attached is a form for you to give to grandparents or other relatives to purchase a hurdle for your son or daughter. The hurdles are $125 and you can put their names on them. Wow, I am constantly amazed by the support of the Woodward-Granger community.

Week of 11-2-09
We are in need of your tremendous support on Monday night (November 2nd). The Hawk football team and cheerleaders would like to see you line the streets a couple of blocks from the football field (back west) to cheer them on as they take the field. The team appreciated the many fans supporting them last Wednesday, and need you again! Please start lining up at 5:45. The game begins at 7:00pm and the cost is $6 per person.
See you there and Go Hawks!
IPODS and other electronic devices!! Please have your sons and daughters keep there prized possessions secure. They need to be locked in their lockers or at home! If they need to bring them to school and need a place to keep them safe they can check them into my office. Please record the serial numbers and other information so they can be identified! We had two incidents of stolen electronics last week.
A special thank you to the Middle School PTO for hosting a very fun Middle School Dance last Friday night. Thanks also to you parents who supported the event. Without you we would not be able to have these events. One positive comment I heard was that we did not have enough chairs so all the boys could not sit down! The only complaint I heard from the kids was that it was too short.
Keep Checking the Website for any late breaking information!
Have a Great Week

10-16-09
Lockers: MS: We are still having locker issues in the MS. They were to be painted and fixed over the summer. The painting was done and they look nice. The fixing part was not done and we are still working with the company to return to fix them. The HS lockers are to be here at 9:00 am tomorrow. That is the good news! The bad news is that they will not ALL be installed tomorrow at 9:00 am so we are still being patient.
Handbooks: Attached you will find the 2009-10 MS and HS Handbooks. We are having problems getting them on the website and have been trying for over 2 months. Let me know if you have questions! We did not print and hand these out to attempt to save money!
Conferences: Conferences this year will be arena style where all the teachers will be in the gym and you will be able to talk to whichever teacher you want. We received a lot of positive feedback from parents last spring. One negative comment was that the teachers were too close together, but in the new gym that should not be an issue. Those dates are Nov. 10 and Nov. 12 from 3 to 8 pm. We will be sending out more info about conferences.
Schedule:
Today Oct. 16th:
7:30 pm Varsity Football vs. Manson-NW Webster (T)
Saturday Oct. 17th:
9:00 am Volleyball Girls Varsity W-G Invitational HS Gym
Monday Oct. 19th:

6:00 pm Football Boys Junior Varsity Woodward Granger vs. Southeast Webster High School
Tuesday Oct. 20th:

Friday Oct. 23rd:

Please call me or your child’s teachers if you have questions and you are always welcome to email!
Have a great weekend!

Dear WGHS Hawk Parents,
We are inviting you to be a part of the WG HS Booster Club this year. What does the Booster Club do? We are non-profit organization that supplements the athletic and fine arts departments. With the tightening budgets, we are needed more than ever! Our major fundraiser event is supplying volunteers to “man” a home Iowa State University football concession stand. At each of the 6 home games, we need 25 volunteers (parents and students) to make this work. If your student is involved in an extra curricular activity, we need your help. Please call the high school office at 438-2115 to sign up for the three remaining games-October 17th, November 7th, and 14th. We are on pace to raise $9000 for the season which means this money is coming from outside our community!
In the past few years, our money has been spent towards the baseball lights and a pitching machine, money towards new marching band jackets, a basketball shooting machine, travel bags and warm up shirts for the basketball teams, a strength machine and a two man sled for football, a specialist coach for volleyball camps, passes at the Dome for the golf teams, two sets of hurdles for track, wrestling mat carts, wrestling scoreboards, pep buses for state wrestlers, chorographers for cheerleaders, pom-poms, make up supplies for the drama department, meals for band and cheerleader at their yearly appreciation night, meals for volleyball and football teams participating in playoff games, equipment for the softball team, art tables, weight room machines, new chains for the football field and a tarp floor covering for the gyms.
We also organize the sports posters, provide the desserts during the intermission at the plays, provide a Homecoming meal and auction items, manage baseball and softball concession stands in the summer, concession stand at the Jazz Festival, sell Hawk Spirit items and award 4-6 scholarships in the spring.
Our teams and fine arts departments have really turned around to become conference champs, advancing further into district play and qualifying kids at the state level. We believe with the “extras” we can provide, our programs can only get stronger. The money earned this fall, goes directly into the programs by February 1st so we need all to get involved!
The W-G Booster Club meets at 6:00 pm the first Wednesday of each month at the Granger Elementary. You can look for the meeting dates on the W-G website under “Hot Topics”. Please come and join us and bring any new ideas or suggestions you may have.
Thank you in advance.

Dear W-G Families & Friends,
I am writing today to inform you that the District has received the first reports of confirmed cases of the H1N1 Flu throughout both Woodward and Granger. With this announcement the intent is not to spread panic or fear about this highly publicized influenza but more to inform you of the manner in which all public entities in the state have been instructed to handle the situation.
The Iowa Department of Public Health is focused on early detection and systematic suggestions for dealing with the rapid spread of the flu. These recommendations are outlined below.
1) Any child that is experiencing any or all of the following symptoms is encouraged to remain at home until such time that the symptoms have passed. In addition it is recommended that an additional 24-hours of symptom free conditions elapse before returning to school or a public setting. The flu symptoms are outlined below.
(fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, vomiting, diarrhea, aches, chills and/or fatigue) Note: not everyone with the flu will have a fever
2) Remember the three C's:
• Clean your hands frequently;
• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve; and
• Contain germs by staying home when ill.
•
3) Iowa Public Health recommends that children under 2, adults that are 65 and
older, pregnant women and individuals with pre-existing medical illnesses are at the highest risk for flu complications and should consult a health care physician immediately if symptoms persist.
At this time there are no concrete guidelines on what to do if the total absent student population reaches a certain percentage or level. The decision will be made locally as to continue with and/or cancel school in the event that the outbreak warrants.
Prevention, detection and the three C’s are the tools put forth to guide schools in dealing with this issue. If you have any further questions regarding the H1N1 Flu and or the contents of this article please refer to the following website http://www.idph.state.ia.us/ or contact the District office at (515)438-4263.
Respectfully,

The HS students were also well behaved on Thursday during their half day of decorating for Homecoming! The painting that went on is outstanding!! We had the classes paint different hallways where the lockers will be in the future(Hopefully soon!!).
A BIG Thank you to all the parents who help make the homecoming activities possible! Your effort is very much appreciated.

I am so thankful to everyone who took time out of your busy schedules to tour the secondary school on Wednesday!
One of the best things I heard was from a group of older patrons: “Wow this school is big and beautiful! Everyone can be proud of it!”
A big thank you to all the students and staff for being flexible. We are very proud of our school and I am most proud of the students and staff at Woodward Granger.
Tonight is the first home football game. Kickoff is at 7:30. Also, at half time, the cheerleaders will be performing the routine that they learned for the Kansas City Chiefs Game this summer. Hope to see, and hear, you cheering for the hawks tonight!
Hope everyone has a fun safe weekend! Go HAWKS!!!

Obama Speech to Students
There have been questions about whether or not the Woodward-Granger CSD would take time out of the instructional day on Tuesday Sept. 8th to listen to President Obama’s National address to students. The decision has been made not to interrupt the instructional day for this address. The District Board, administration and staff recognize the feelings that surround this potentially politically charged issue and at this time feel it is necessary to proceed with a normal day of school. If you have any additional questions regarding this decision you may contact Ms. Jody Gray, Superintendent at (515) 438-4263.
What is the Revenue Purpose Statement?
Since 1999, WGCSD has used the penny tax revenue to enhance learning opportunities for our kids including:
Additions to Woodward-Granger Elementary School
The new weight room and wrestling building
Computers and other technology purchases & upgrades
Updating the elementary and secondary food service facilities
Purchase of baseball lights
What is the revenue purpose statement?
In 1999, Polk County voters approved a one-cent local-option sales tax for school improvements. Dallas County voters and Boone County voters approved a similar tax in 2003. During the 2008 session, the Iowa Legislature enacted a statewide version of the one-cent tax, which will replace the Polk County local sales tax after it expires in 2010 and the Dallas and Boone Counties local- option sales tax after it expires in 2013.
On September 8, Woodward-Granger residents will be asked to vote on the District’s continued use of these funds to benefit our kids and their education needs. This would not be a new tax but rather a continuation of an established tax. Approval of the revenue purpose statement will ensure that the Woodward-Granger Community School District will receive our share of the statewide sales tax. If the revenue purpose statement is not approved the state will continue to collect the sales tax but the Woodward-Granger CSD share will be distributed among the other school districts that have an approved revenue purpose statement.
How will the money be used if the statement is approved?
All funds from the statewide one-cent sales tax will go directly to school districts. Approval will provide the school board continued access to this revenue source to help fund the following needs:
Renovating and adding on to existing elementary school
Purchasing, building & furnishing new buildings
Remodeling, repairing, expanding & improving existing buildings
Expanding & Improving technology in classrooms throughout the district
Renovating & expanding athletic facilities
To provide property tax relief
Purchasing new buses
Debt service payments

6-12 Tour the New and Improved Schools Night
Please mark your calendar for Wednesday September 2nd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm to tour the new and improved buildings.
We will be giving tours and will allow all to roam the halls(We will have maps for everyone)
Please park in the front(East side). For additional parking you can check on the west side but I am not sure if that will be ready.
This is basically a tour of the building all teachers may not be in their rooms. Middle School Students may bring their school supplies to put in their lockers.
HS Students bring your school supplies on Thursday(since we do not have lockers yet!) and bring a bag or backpack to carry them around with you.
(We will have the locker assignments and their combinations to tryout.) We have MS staff with keys to help the students the first week or two.
Hope to meet everyone on Wednesday night. Thank you to all who put so much time and effort into making this possible for the students, staff and community of Woodward-Granger!!!

Post 2
Hi everyone,
This is the first parent email (NOW BLOG)for the HS Parents of the year!!!
1) FROM the Athletic Department:
FRIDAY AUGUST 21, 2009
9/JV/Varsity Volleyball: in order from 5:00 to 6:30 PM.
9/JV/Varsity Football: Kickoff @ 7:00 PM.
* The Youth Football will have the concession stand open before and during the football scrimmage.
ADMISSION: 1 sports drink per person.
2) The Principal has a blog!! (( http://w-gprincipal.blogspot.com/)) Be nice, I am just starting but I hope to have good info on there.
3) Construction Progress: The project is coming along very, very nicely!!! There are going to be some minor issues that will need to get worked out after school starts. The gym and science rooms are state of the art. We are going to try to get the students and parents in for a tour before school starts but I am not exactly sure what day yet. It will probably be the day before school starts; September 2nd in the evening.
4) We will not have lockers installed but I will have more information to follow on that issue.
5) The middle school is also looking very nice. All the rooms have been repainted and all have been re-carpeted except for those which had been carpeted recently.
6) Also I hope you can tell I am very excited about our new facilities but more important than the brick and mortar are your sons and daughters. I can’t wait to get school started and I hope they are as well. Everyone will need to be flexible but like was witnessed last year everyone is willing to do their part in making W-G a great place to get an education.
All for now but I hope to have a video on my blog soon!
